Beinsured

User Experience Design | Figma Prototyping | Product Strategy

Originally developed as part of DSCI 556: User Experience Design & Strategy, Beinsured is a UX strategy project that tackles a real-world pain point: navigating U.S. health insurance as an international student.

Sitting at the intersection of business and technology, the project began with user interviews then business model canvas, crafted personas, and several iterative UX research and testing. The result finally came to life as a prototype app designed to make insurance selection easier, clearer, and more intuitive.

The Final Deliverable

Before diving into all the behind-the-scenes work that brought this prototype to life, I want to show it to you first. I mean… it’s hard not to lead with the part you’re most proud of, especially after all that sweat and debugging. 😋

As the sole developer on the team, I’m excited to introduce the final version of the BeInsured app. To reflect trust and clarity, we chose a blue-and-gray color palette, paired with clean flat cards and simple button styles. The app centers around four core features—Advanced Filtering, Smart Insurance Planner, Comparison Tool, and Personal Plan Portal—all designed to make choosing insurance feel more intuitive, less overwhelming, and actually human.

Problem Statement

International students often face difficulty understanding and comparing U.S. health-insurance options. The lack of a clear, consolidated resource makes it challenging for them to evaluate plans confidently and determine which coverage best fits their needs.

Empathy Maps

Our empathy map highlights the core challenges international students face when navigating U.S. health insurance. In practice, students rely on Googling terms, asking friends for advice, reading multiple PDFs, or postponing care until absolutely necessary.

These behaviors reflect a broader desire for clearer explanations, simpler comparisons, and more trustworthy guidance. The empathy map helps us understand these needs and informs how BeInsured can better support students throughout their insurance-selection process.

Provisional Persona

This persona represents a core segment of our intended users and has been central to shaping the direction of BeInsured. Understanding Trojan’s goals, frustrations, and decision-making habits has helped us identify the specific problems international students face and guided the design of features that simplify comparison, clarify coverage, and support more confident insurance choices.

Competitive Analysis Matrix

To understand the international student insurance market, we built a Competitive Analysis Matrix that maps both direct and indirect competitors across key dimensions such as value proposition, pricing model, traffic scale, UX quality, personalization features, and competitive positioning. By executing the SWOT analysis, we were able to identify common friction points, such as complex plan details and unclear pricing, and uncover gaps in transparency and navigation that inform our platform’s differentiation strategy.
